In Texas, 15 new criminal human trafficking cases were filed in federal courts in 2021. 32 defendants were convicted. 95 percent (37) of new defendants were charged with sex trafficking, and five percent (2) were charged with forced labor. Texas federal courts ordered nine out of 30 convicted criminal human trafficking defendants to pay restitution to their victim(s) in 2021. This is an increase of two percent from 2020, when five out of eighteen convicted Texas human trafficking defendants were ordered to pay restitution.
